About 1 800 workers trapped underground at the platinum operations Sibanye gold after the incident in the mine, the company said.

The Company may use an adjacent shaft to lift workers to
surface, although there is currently no assessment if it can
happen, the spokesman said.

Some rails are transported underground in the mine fell and blocked his spokesman said James Wellsted.

Sibanye estimates shaft infrastructure, which can take several hours, he said.

There were no injuries in the accident.

The workers entered the mine this morning, and the incident occurred at about lunch time around, they usually end their shift, he said.

The incident could revive concerns about security in the Sibanye, which last year experienced a surge in fatal accidents.

About 1 000 workers were trapped underground for more than one day in one of the gold mines in February 2018 after a power failure.

market reaction

Sibanye fell as much as 4.1% to trade 2.7% lower at 16:31 in Johannesburg.
