They spent a full body scan 31 people with cancer – including lung cancer, esophagus, colon and breast cancer – with the help of a machine that combines PET and computed tomography (PET / CT). Scans were evaluated malignancy and tumor aggressiveness on the basis of measurements, called maximum standardized uptake (SUVmax). They found a strong correlation between SUVmax and C-reactive protein. They also found a strong correlation between the levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 levels. Finally, there were strong correlations between interleukin 6 levels, BMI and fasting glucose in the blood.
They found that the level of fasting blood glucose and interleukin-6 levels, in particular, were good predictors of tumor aggression. blood glucose level and a post increased interleukin gradually decreased, the higher the value SUVmax tumor was above 6.0. This may mean that the increase in the level of blood sugar in people with tumors that have SUVmax values above 6.0 indicates that they are becoming increasingly aggressive. Falling levels of interleukin-6 in high tumors SUVmax, on the other hand, may indicate effective treatment.
"The serum inflammatory markers and endogenous glucose is associated with a potentially more aggressive malignant cancer," the researchers conclude in their study, published in the journal Pertanika Science & Technology. "In particular, Interleukin 6 may be used as a useful surrogate marker of the tumor aggressiveness with important prognostic value," they write.
Further studies, however, it is necessary to understand why Interleukin 6 level is changed in this way.
