Football: United develop as underdogs ahead of the derby match – Herrera

(Reuters) – Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes the team has shown they can develop as underdogs and will seek to secure another statement in the derby on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho United will make a short trip to face Premier League leaders Manchester City as they try to rebuild a 2-1 win over Italian champions Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The win in Turin added four unbeaten matches in the domestic league, with United rising to the standings after a poor start to the campaign.

"When you win, you are more optimistic in your preparation for the next match," Herrera told British media.

"We are a real Manchester United, also in bad times, because we have to admit we have bad moments and must be improved.

"It's true that the latest results give us good enthusiasm, energy, but real Manchester United … we'll see at the end of the season if we can say we have a good season."

United bounced back from two goals to beat Pep Guardiola City in last season's fixture to delay the coronation of their neighbors as Premier League champions, but Herrera said recent history counted for nothing.

"It's a new match, a new situation," added the Spanish midfielder. "Hopefully, we can win. It's true they are favorites because they are in an extraordinary form but this is Manchester United and you never know what can happen."

Seventh placed United nine points behind City, who are unbeaten this season with 29 points from 11 matches.
