Most of us know that work-related stress does not do a body good; nor does the absence of a good night's sleep. Both stress and poor sleep come with all kinds of health risks on their own, but also for people with hypertension, the combination is even worse.
It's a bad thing? Work stress and sleep disturbances associated with threefold higher risk of cardiovascular death in hypertensive patients, according to new research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
"Sleep should be a time to relax, unwind and restore energy levels. If you have job stress, sleep helps restore. Unfortunately, poor sleep and stress in the workplace often go hand in hand, and in combination with hypertensive effect is even more toxic, "says one of the authors, Karl-Heinz Ladwig, from the German Research Center for Environmental Health and the Medical Faculty of the Munich Technical University.
Study & # 39 is the first to look at how job stress and sleep disturbances contribute to death from cardiovascular disease in hypertensive workers.
The study looked at 1,959 workers aged 25 to 65 years from a cohort study of MONICA / bark – all participants had hypertension, but without cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Compared with those without work stress and good sleep, people with both risk factors were three times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. People with an operating voltage of only had 1.6 times higher risk while only a bad dream was 1.8 times higher risk.
