If work stress and poor sleep with a & # 39 is a deadly mix

Stressful work in conjunction with sleep disorders associated with triple high risk of cardiovascular death among employees with high blood pressure.

Most of us know that work-related stress does not do a body good; nor does the absence of a good night's sleep. Both stress and poor sleep come with all kinds of health risks on their own, but also for people with hypertension, the combination is even worse.

It's a bad thing? Work stress and sleep disturbances associated with threefold higher risk of cardiovascular death in hypertensive patients, according to new research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

"Sleep should be a time to relax, unwind and restore energy levels. If you have job stress, sleep helps restore. Unfortunately, poor sleep and stress in the workplace often go hand in hand, and in combination with hypertensive effect is even more toxic, "says one of the authors, Karl-Heinz Ladwig, from the German Research Center for Environmental Health and the Medical Faculty of the Munich Technical University.

Study & # 39 is the first to look at how job stress and sleep disturbances contribute to death from cardiovascular disease in hypertensive workers.

The study looked at 1,959 workers aged 25 to 65 years from a cohort study of MONICA / bark – all participants had hypertension, but without cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Compared with those without work stress and good sleep, people with both risk factors were three times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. People with an operating voltage of only had 1.6 times higher risk while only a bad dream was 1.8 times higher risk.

Defining work-related stress is interesting: Work with high demand and low control. In other words, the work in which there are high expectations, but the employee does not have the authority to make decisions. "If you have high expectations, but also a high control, in other words, you can make decisions, it may even be positive for health," said Ladwig. "But, being caught in a pressured situation, you have no right to change the bad."

Sleep disturbance was defined as a hard time falling asleep and / or staying asleep. "Maintaining sleep with & # 39 is the most common problem in people with stressful jobs," said Ladwig. "They wake up at 4 am to go to the bathroom and back to bed talks about how to deal with the problems of work."

"These insidious problem," he continued. "The risk of not having a tough day and not sleep. He suffers from job stress and poor sleep for years that attenuate energy resources and could lead to an early grave."

"Every condition with & # 39 is a risk factor in itself and there are interferences between them, that is, every one of them increases the risk of another. Physical activity, healthy eating and relaxation strategy is important, as well as lowering blood pressure medication, if needed, "said Ladwig.

This is a difficult situation. Most people can not afford to simply switch between jobs; but adds to the stress of poor sleep, poor sleep increases stress and they all add to the increased risk of cardiovascular death in hypertensive workers. It would be great to see the employer is implementing a stress management in the workplace, and workers will be well served by adopting their own sleep, which promotes activities and relieves stress. Four days a week of work and the nature of breaks, anyone?
